Abstract
From June 1978 to February 1980, 139 patients underwent valve replacement with the St. Jude Medical Cardiac Valve Prosthesis (SJMP): 107 aortic (AVR), 22 mitral (MVR), and 10 double replacements (DVR). Intraoperative transvalvular pressure gradients were always within 10 mm Hg. There were four (2.8%) non-valve-related operative deaths. Out of the two late deaths (1.4%), one occurrred in a DVR patient not maintained on anticoagulants and was due to a mitral SJMP thrombosis.
