Abstract

Based on the work of Yalow and Berson (1959) on the detection of insulin, radioimmunoassay (RIA) has now developed to be the best and most versatile method for the detection of trace amounts of biologically active substances (hereinafter termed antigens). To enable the detection of an antigen using RIA, the following conditions must be fulfilled

  1. a)

Availability of purified antigen for standardization

  2. b)

Availability of antibodies reacting specifically with the antigen to be determined

  3. c)

Availability of radioactively labeled antigen with sufficient specific activity

  4. d)

Availability of a system allowing separation of the antibody-bound and free antigen.
