Influence of Cardiac Glycosides on Electrophysiologic Processes

  • Chapter
Cardiac Glycosides

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 56 / 1))

Abstract

An understanding of the effects of cardiac glycosides has been impaired mainly by the limited knowledge of the structures and functions upon which they act. With the introduction of new approaches to investigation, such as the voltage clamp technique or ion-selective microelectrodes, considerable progress has been made over the last decade. It is the purpose of this chapter to review the advances made in this field. The scope of this article has had to be confined to certain aspects of the overall problem. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanical and electrical actions that cardiac glycosides exert on isolated but otherwise “normal” ventricular tissue. The reader is also referred to other review articles (Vassalle, 1977; Beeler, 1977; Ferrier, 1977a; Tsien et al., 1978 a, b).
