Evaluation of Cardiac Glycosides in Isolated Heart Preparations Other than Papillary Muscle

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 56 / 1))

Abstract

Complementary to Chap. 9, which dealt primarily with the evaluation of cardiac glycosides in isolated papillary muscle, further methods often used in the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the action of cardiac glycosides are to be discussed. Details of the methods have been included not only to encourage experimental work, but also to give information to those wishing to evaluate results without previous practical experience. Further details of different methods are described by Lendle (1935), Weese (1936), Klaus (1966), Thorp and Cobbin (1967), Katzung (1968), and Levy (1971). In addition to the particular methods, some experimental results have also been included to provide some idea of the usefulness of the procedures and to indicate several possible modifications.
