Abstract
Deep venous thrombosis is a common complication following major surgical procedures. It appears to occur particularly in patients undergoing major lower limb orthopaedic procedures such as total hip replacement, where the incidence has been reported to vary from 20 to 80% depending on the technique used for diagnosing the thrombosis and the nature of the prophylactic measures. Autopsy studies on patients dying in the postoperative period have revealed that pulmonary embolism is the most common cause of death after this operation.
