Abstract
The basic pharmacological property of nitrites is to relax smooth muscle, and the well-documented hemodynamic effects of these drugs have generally been thought to be secondary to their actions on vascular smooth muscle [5, 11]. Direct cardiac effects have remained largely undetermined or controversial. We have studied the actions of nitroglycerin (NTG) on left ventricular (LV) function in man administered by the sublingual (SL) [1] route and by intracoronary (IC) injection [6]. This approach allowed separation of direct (cardiac) and indirect (peripheral) effects of the drug.
