Abstract

By photon statistics methods the statistical features of optical instabilities have been measured with high accuracy over the past years. Their critical behavior can be classified with the language of equilibrium phase transitions. Furthermore, in nonequilibrium optical systems it is possible to study the transient build-up of an ordered state by a rapid passage through an instability. These transients are characterized by large fluctuations. An exact approach is described in terms of a stochastic time.
