Biosynthesis and Enzymic Regulation of the Interconversion of Cytokinin

Abstract

Plants, as intact organisms, do not have a cytokinin requirement for their growth by virtue of the capacity of their tissues to synthesize cytokinins de novo. Most of the culture cell lines, however, require an exogenous source of cytokinin and other nutrients for cell division and differentiation. Although cytokinins are relatively abundant in shoots and it seems logical that shoots as well as roots are capable of synthesizing cytokinins, little experimental evidence was available for cytokinin formation in shoots. To address this problem, rootless tobacco plants were grown and cytokinin biosynthesis in shoots was examined.
