Investigations using various laboratory tests including semen analyses showed no measurable pharmacological side effects of tretinoin therapy in patients with acne vulgaris treated orally with 20 to 30 mg/day over a period of 90 to 300 days (4). Recently, however, Tsambaos et al. (7) showed a reversible inhibition of spermatogenesis in guinea pigs treated systemically with high doses of aromatic retinoid (Ro 10-9359). This prompted us to study the semen of patients in order to rule out drug-induced inhibition of spermatogenesis or impairment of sperm motility and sperm morphology after systemic treatment with aromatic retinoid or 13-cis-retinoic acid (2).
