Effect of Systemic Ro 10-9359 Treatment on Immunological Parameters in Darier’s Disease

Abstract

The cutaneous disturbances of patients suffering from Darier’s disease (keratosis follicularis) are well known, and are generally thought to reflect an abnormality in keratinocyte maturation. Recently, data have been presented indicating that Darier patients, in addition, suffer from a dysfunction of the cell-mediated immune system (2, 3, 5). As oral retinoids are known to be effective in reverting the epidermal changes of this disease (6), we thought it to be of interest to analyze, whether retinoids also might affect the immune function of Darter patients. To answer this question, several immunological parameters were tested in 5 Darier patients. Thereafter, 4 of the patients took oral etretinate (Ro 10-9359), 50–70 mg daily for 6–8 weeks, and the immunological tests were repeated. Normal values were obtained from analyzing 5 age- and sex-matched individual controls and an additional group of 12 healthy persons.
