Der formale historische Hintergrund für die Beschäftigung von CODASYL mit der Datenbankverwaltung läßt sich nachlesen im Journal of Development, June 1973, des Data Description Language Committee (DDLC). Diese historische Entwicklung soll in diesem Kapitel zusammengefaßt und um einige persönliche Kommentare über die relevanten Ereignisse der letzten 15 Jahre ergänzt dargestellt werden.
