Problems of Plasma Exchange Therapy

Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

Abstract

Due to the introduction of blood cell separators, plasma exchange has become a powerful method of therapy. On the other hand, the plasma composition of the organism can be altered to an extent that risks may be inevitable. Problems may also arise from the technique used or from an interference with hardly known pathophysiological mechanisms. It is the purpose of this presentation to discuss the major problems of plasma exchange therapy, drawing mainly from our experience of more than 200 treatments (Table 1).
