Abstract

At birth the newborn infant loses its continuous supply of nutrients via the placenta. If the postnatal metabolic demand (Table 16) is not met, the limited caloric reserves of the newborn (glycogen, fat) are quickly exhausted. This catabolic state is manifested by hypoglycemia, hyperkalemia, hyperbilirubinemia, and acetonemia. Postnatal malnutrition can lead to a disturbance of cerebral metabolism, with permanent brain damage. The prompt and adequate administration of fluid and calories is essential for optimal postnatal development [21, 22].
