Abstract
The purpose of a biopsy is the microscopic clarification of tumorous alterations, which cannot be assessed clinically nor macroscopically, for adequate therapeutic treatment. In particular, the purpose is to ascertain the diagnosis of real tumors thus leading to the indication for radical surgery. A biopsy procedure can fulfill this purpose only if it enables an exact determination, made quickly enough, without further considerable strain or the possibility of serious complications. The time available for intraoperative use in the sense of a rapid diagnostic procedure is about 20 min.
