Abstract

The surgical treatment of acute pancreatitis is still a subject of controversy. In particular it is the early organ resection, which is primarily advocated by many French surgeons [1, 3, 10, 19, 22] as an alternative to the less aggressive procedures of conserving the organ, which causes the controversy [2, 4, 5,17,18, 23]. In referring to the serious possibilities of errors arising from surgical treatment, Warren and McDonald [20] talk about the “too early” and the “too late” with a view to the timing of the operation and of “too much” with respect to the type of intervention. In the light of our present knowledge we also ought to give the same attention to the “too little.”
