Abstract

The biochemistry and physiology of ethylene was last reviewed in Progress in Botany four years ago (Progr. Bot. 38, 157). An article written by OSBORNE (1978) covers the literature up to 1977. In the meantime great advances have been obtained especially in the elucidation of the biosynthetic pathway. LIEBERMAN (1979) has reviewed the respective literature up to 1978 in his article on Biosynthesis and Action of Ethylene in the Annual Review of Plant Physiology. The literature concerning the role of ethylene in soil biology has been reviewed by Smith (1976). Meanwhile, further advances have been achieved, so that it seems worthwile to discuss the present status of our knowledge in detail.
