Abstract
Indole alkaloids are among the most complex and diverse low molecular natural products. About 1000 such monoterpenoid derivatives are known to occur in higher plants which include such important members as ajmaline, quinine, strychnine, vincristine, yohimbine, and others, some of which have high commercial interest (GANZINGER and HESSE, 1976). The principles of their biosynthesis via the condensation of tryptamine (I) with the monoterpenoid iridoid secologanin (II) has been discussed in Progr. Bot. 39, 83 ff. (cf. CORDELL, 1974; PHILLIPSON and ZENK, 1979).
