Zusammenfassung
Daß Krankheiten Folge spezifischer Verhaltensweisen sein können, hat durch die Untersuchungen zum „Coronary-prone-behavior“ (koronargefährdende Verhaltensweisen) besondere Aufmerksamkeit in der Medizin erlangt. Dieser Forschungsrichtung wurde anfänglich — und zum Teil ist dies auch heute noch der Fall — erheblicher Widerstand entgegengesetzt. Trotzdem scheint der Ansatz, Verhalten und seine Beziehung zur Krankheit als Ausgangspunkt zu wählen, erfolgreicher als ältere Bemühungen in der psychosomatischen Medizin, einen Zusammenhang zwischen Persönlichkeitsmerkmalen und Krankheiten zu entdecken. Die umfangreiche Literatur zu diesem Gebiet ist ein Indiz für das wachsende Interesse; sie zeigt gleichzeitig aber auch, welch großer Arbeitsaufwand notwendig war, bis ein komplexes Verhaltensmuster schließlich als Risikofaktor abgesichert werden konnte. Erstmals in der medizinischen Geschichte gelang es, objektiv beschreibbare Verhaltensweisen mit der koronaren Herzkrankheit zu verknüpfen.
