Der Begriff Systementwicklung hat mindestens vier verschiedene Bedeutungen:

AUFGABE: Systementwicklung (AnwendungsSystementwicklung) ist die Aufgabe der Entwicklung, Produktion von Anwendungssystemen, die verkürzt als ‘Systeme’ bezeichnet werden.

BEREICH: Systementwicklung ist eine aufbauorganisatorische Einheit, wie z.B. Abteilung, deren Aufgabe die Systementwicklung ist.

AUFTRAG: Systementwicklung ist ein Auftrag an die Organisationseinheit Systementwicklung, für Anwender ein Anwendungssystem zu entwickeln.

PROZESS: Systementwicklung ist der Prozeß der Entwicklung eines Anwendungssystems von der Idee bis zum Produkt.
