Nach mehrjährigen vorbereitenden Gesprächen und Konferenzen wurde im Jahre 1875 die Meterkonvention als Staatsvertrag von 17 Staaten unterzeichnet; am 1. 5. 1975, nach einem Jahrhundert, waren 44 Staaten diesem metrologischen Vertragswerk beigetreten.
