Abstract

The chemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of cannabis were described in details in the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology, Vol. 54/2 (1977). The purpose of this article is not to repeat that information, but to supplement it and present other points of view, as well as to summarize new aspects, e.g., the interaction of cannabis with other drugs. In addition, attempts to provide explanations for certain phenomena that cannot be definitely interpreted owing to contradictory findings (mostly resulting from the diverse methodologies used) are perhaps not only of heuristic value.
