Caffeine in the form of caffeine-containing beverages is probably one of the most widely used psychostimulatory agents. The use of coffee beans is first reported in the fifteenth century in Ethiopia and Arabia. The habit of coffee drinking soon became popular, first in the Near East and about 100 years later in Europe. From there it spread over the western hemisphere. Today the per capita consumption of coffee in various countries is in the range of several kilograms per annum (Table 1).
