Abstract

As noted at the outset, adults are capable of making a variety of kinds of judgments about utterances. For one, they are capable of noticing that utterances which they or others have produced are, in one way or another, defective. Few would judge Eliot’s The Wasteland or the blatherings of Lewis Carroll’s Jaberwock to be normal, acceptable English.
