Abstract
As laboratory examinations play an ever greater role in modern diagnosis and in monitoring therapy, it is obviously desirable to have the most useful tests selected for performance and automation. The questions that need to be addressed in this connection are: Who should determine the selection? What have been the usual determinants of test selection in the past? Can the process of selection and automation be influenced at all?
