Abstract

The first confirmed total pancreatectomy was carried out by Rockey in 1942 in a patient with carcinoma of the head of the pancreas. The patient survived only 15 days after the operation. The second total pancreatectomy, which was carried out by Priestley in the same year in a 49 year old female patient, was already convincing. The patient, who was operated on for an insulinoma, died 29 years after the operation after “an active and vigorous life” [6].

Dedicated to Professor Wolfgang Hoffmeister, Mannheim, on the occasion of his 70th birthday
