Pathophysiology of Intra- and Postoperative Stress

  • Chapter
Endocrinology in Anaesthesia and Surgery

Abstract

Leriche presented one of the synonymes for stress. In our opinion his term, postaggression syndrom, best describes the change in metabolism relative to the normal situation. The stress factor is the aggressor and the reaction of the organism toward this danger is a reaction in the sense of offence al well as defence. The aim is survival that is to reach the next moment but not to make preperations for the future. While pain and scares are stress factores which elucidate reactions for seconds, minutes, or also a few hours, there are stimuli which create, with or without consciousness or psychic modulation, long term changes in metabolism.
