Abstract
Acute adrenal insufficiency during or after anesthesia and surgery in glucocorticoid-treated patients is one of the most dangerous and much feared complications. This is characterized mainly by arterial hypotension, tachycardia and terminating in shock or death. Since the number of glucocorticoid-treated patients has been increasing, it seems to be appropriate to investigate 1. the frequency of occurrence of this complication, 2. the adrenocortical function in steroid treated patients during acute stress, 3. method of preoperative evaluation, and 4. pre- and postoperative management of these patients.
