Hormonal Control of Morphogenesis in Cultured Tissues

Abstract

Several aspects of the hormonal control of morphogenesis have been reviewed recently (1–5). As a result, a comprehensive review of this topic would appear to be redundant at the present time. A better use for these pages would appear to be the presentation of a critical evaluation of the idea that two hormones, auxin and cytokinin, represent the primary morphogens in higher plants. To narrow the topic somewhat, I intend to confine my attention to studies which have been conducted with cultured tissues, where much of the important work has been done. Although it is by no means an established fact, the bulk of this work supports the hypothesis that auxin and cytokinin represent the primary signals for organogenesis and cytodifferentiation in higher plants.
