Abstract
The first great cosmological discovery was surely the expansion of the universe, at least from the standpoint of astronomers working in the late twentieth century. Around 1930, HUBBLE discovered that the whole world of “island universes” beyond our own Galaxy is expanding. All the galaxies rush away from us with speeds up to 1000 km s-1 for the nearby ones, 10,000 km s-1 for the more distant and 100,000 km s-1 or more for the furthest.
