Abstract
Cytochrome oxidase catalyses the terminal step of mitochondrial respiration, the transfer of electrons from cytochrome c to molecular oxygen to form water. According to Mitchell’s chemiosmotic theory, it generates an electrochemical gradient by catalysing reaction between substrates on opposite sides of the inner mitochondrial membrane.
