Abstract
A congenital flexion contracture of the thumb at its IP joint is caused by a constriction of the anular ligament of the MP joint at the level of the sesamoid bones in combination with a fusiform swelling of the tendon of m. flex. poll. long. This tendinous “nodule” cannot glide through the anular ligament, and it is impossible to extend the joint even passively. Similar findings are present in patients suffering from hypo- or aplasia of this tendon. Familial appearance of this disorder is not infrequent; twins can be affected by it.
