Abstract
SPV eliminates the vagal influences on parietal cells by extragastric, preganglionic denervation of the acid producing part of the stomach (fundus-corpus-area) down to the transitional zone of the antrum. So the cephalic phase of acid secretion is blocked. Simultaneously the oxyntic cell becomes less sensitive to other endogenous stimulants (gastrin, histamine). The success of this operation therefore depends on an extragastric denervation of the proximal part of the stomach which is as complete as possible.
