1888 benchtete Paul Ehrlich über eine 21jährige Patientin, die an einer schweren Anämie und Leukopenic mit multiplen Blutungen litt und bei der sich trotz hochgradiger Vermindemng des Hämoglobins und der roten Blutkörperchen keine kernhaltigen Erythrozyten oder sonstige Regenerationszeichen nachweisen ließen; da sich auch bei der Autopsie „im Femur nur schwefelgelbes bis rötlich-gelbes Fettmark fand“, nannte Ehrlich die Erkrankung „aplastische Anämie“.
