Abstract
In 1958, that is nearly 20 years ago, Loeschcke and Koepchen (1) introduced the ventral surface of the brain stem as a site from which respiratory and circulatory effects were obtained by topical application of drugs or of solutions with different pH. Their experiments were mainly concerned with respiration, although blood pressure effects were described as well. Three distinct respiratory chemosensitive or thermosensitive zones were later localized at the ventral surface, the M, S and L zones, the letters standing for the names Mitchell, Schläfke and Loeschcke.
