Anatomic Substrates of Ventricular Preexcitation

  • Conference paper
Medical and Surgical Management of Tachyarrhythmias

Abstract

Preexcitation is defined as the condition in which part or all of the ventricular muscle mass is activated earlier than expected if activation had occurred by way of the atrioventricular node and bundle (1). Pre-excitation as so defined can exist only if, in some way or another, the delay-producing effects of the specialized atrioventricular junctional area are short-circuited. There are many clinical and electrophysiologic studies of preexcitation, yet, surprisingly, relatively little is known of the underlying pathology. Indeed, the precise nature of the anatomic pathways that may underlie preexcitation remain controversial.
