Effects of Adrenergic Activators and Inhibitors on the Skeletal Muscles

  • Chapter
Adrenergic Activators and Inhibitors

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 54 / 2))

Abstract

Sympathomimetic amines affect the functioning of skeletal muscles in several different ways and through a number of different peripheral mechanisms and sites of action. Depending to some extent on the species and the conditions of the experiment, they can be shown to influence the extrafusal muscle fibres themselves, the muscle spindles, the process of neuromuscular transmission, and conduction in the motor nerve. The compounds also affect the tone and spontaneous fibrillatory activity of chronically denervated muscles. Even in the same animal, different types of muscle respond differently, and in some muscles the response obtained may differ, at least quantitatively, according to the age of the animal and to the condition of the muscle (that is, whether or not it is fatigued). In addition to the peripheral actions, central noradrenergic and dopaminergic mechanisms play important roles in the control of skeletal muscle function, but central mechanisms are outside the scope of this chapter.
