Abstract

The surface-relief of the endometrium depends on the status of the sex hormones. During the proliferative phase of a normal cycle the number of ciliary cells increases. The outgrowth of young cilia proves that this type of cell develops anew. Single cilia indicate cessation of mitotic activity and subsequent cell differentiation. Exogenously administered hormones act on the surface structure. Estrogens may promote the development of cilia. In glandularcystic hyperplasia not only are the ciliated cells increased, but also the number of cilia in each cell is greater. Estrogen therapy for anovulatory cycles may lead to complete differentiation. In other cases, however, the endometrial surface manifests a certain “immaturity.”
