Abstract

According to the neurosurgical experience of the past three decades the prognosis of traumatic intracerebral hematomas and/or brain lacerations, whether surgically or conservatively treated, seems to depend to a great extent on the state of consciousness of the patients. Thus, the mortality rate is extremely high in patients who are already in deep coma within 12 hours of the injury, while it is minimal in cases exhibiting only minor disturbances of consciousness. So far only little attention has been paid to ICP behavior in such lesions. As a matter of fact, in all series reported in literature, mass lesions, whatever their type, are compared with diffuse lesions, and therefore intracerebral hematomas are never taken into account as an homogeneous group.
