Toxicology of Antipsychotic Agents

Psychotropic Agents

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 55 / 1))

Abstract

The introduction of chlorpromazine and reserpine for psychiatric use has been followed by a steady increase in the number of psychotropic agents. In the development of new compounds, there have been many attempts to improve the therapeutic indices and to vary the profile of pharmacodynamic activity in accordance with clinical requirements. The number of preparations on the market eases the work of doctors in hospital and general practice and enables them to adapt their treatment plans to individual patients. Inevitably, however, the many drugs available also increase the number and variety of possible toxic reactions and side-effects. This is at once apparent from the different spectra of activity of the individual compounds which often provoke, in man and animals, effects beyond those of their actual psychopharmacological activity. This subject will be considered in greater detail in the chapter on the side-effects of antipsychotic agents.
