Lactic Acid in Shock and Liver Failure

Abstract

Metabolic acidosis during prolonged shock is a well-recognised and documented fact. As shown by Cournand et al. (1) in 1943, acidosis is linked with lactate accumulation in extracellular fluid, which is due to an imbalance between tissue oxygen supply and metabolic needs.
