Abstract

A very extensive literature has accumulated on the metabolic effects of the catecholamines. Most of these metabolic effects were known in their gross outlines, or in interesting heuristic publications, when the field was first reviewed in detail (Ellis, 1956). In the subsequent decades interest in the field spread as questions raised by effects of catecholamines and other agents on metabolism stimulated the development of new knowledge of the cellular mechanisms of metabolic control processes. Further expansion was stimulated by the introduction of the clinically important, selective β- adrenoceptor antagonists and the more selective Mβ-agonists. Progress in the field has been well summarized in broad, general reviews (Wenke, 1965; Himms-Hagen, 1967; Ellis, 1967; Lundholm et al., 1966; Robison et al., 1971; Himms-Hagen, 1972).
