Abstract

In liver segments whose characteristics correspond with those outlined in Rappaport’s definition of the acinus in the periportal and perivenous zones, an increase in the enzymatic activity of glucose utilizing enzymes (pyruvate kinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase) and a decrease in the activity of alanine aminotransferase was proved using the Lowry technique and adult male Wistar rats that received an enhanced glucose supply; in rats fed a calorically restricted standard diet, an opposite tendency was observed in the enzymatic activity in the same acinar zones. Karyometric investigations using the same material revealed equal trend shifts in the distribution of nuclear volumes in the periportal and perivenous acinar zones.
