Neonatal Screening for Hypothyroidism in Brussels

Neonatal Screening for Inborn Errors of Metabolism

Abstract

The incidence of hypothyroidism in newborns reported in mass screening programs is about 1:5000 (Delange et al. 1977b, Fisher et al. 1976; Foley et al. 1975; Walfish 1976; Weissel et al. 1976) to 1:3000 (Illig et al. 1977). These figures agree with those reported for the prevalence of hypothyroidism in children in Holland (De Jonge 1977) and Sweden (Aim et al. 1978). Our results are very different. In a population of about 5000 newborns, we have established the diagnosis of hypothyroidism in 12, an incidence of approximately 1:500. This figure is thus six to ten times higher than that reported by the other groups.
