Abstract

Until a few years ago, endoscopy of the esophagus and stomach was limited to answering specific questions raised by a preceding radiographic examination. The development of fully flexible fiberendoscopes that can be controlled externally and, in particular, the construction of end-viewing optical systems have changed the indications for esophagogastroduodenoscopy completely. Since clinical everyday practice demonstrates that one must anticipate multiple abnormalities in 16% of all patients, the inspection of the entire upper intestinal tract in one procedure, including the postbulbar duodenum, is now endoscopic routine. In many places it is not only used for endoscopie biopsy verification of suspected abnormalities but, more importantly, for the diagnostic evaluation of ill-defined and atypical upper abdominal complaints.
