Blind Aspiration Biopsy

Abstract

Until recently, blind aspiration biopsy was the leading method for the morphologic diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases. The advent of fully flexible fiber endoscopes has greatly decreased the need and, therefore, the importance of this approach. Today, blind gastric biopsy should no longer be employed and is only of historic importance. While blind esophageal biopsy never found wide clinical acceptance, blind small intestinal biopsy, obtained distal to the ligament of Treitz, remains the method of choice when the presence of a malabsorption syndrome is suspected.
