In der ersten Auflage wurde die Geschichte der industriellen Mikrobiologie kurz dargestellt (Rehm, 1967), so daß es hier genügt, große Entwicklungsrichtungen der technischen Mikrobiologie in der Vergangenheit zu schildern:
