Zusammenfassung

Die Arteriosklerose ist eine nicht entzündliche, degenerative Erkrankung, die praktisch jede Körperarterie abschnittweise befallen kann. Sie ist die weitaus häufigste Gefäßerkrankung und ist bei den meisten Personen über 50 Jahren die eigentliche Todesursache. Man weiß, daß die Arteriosklerose früh im Leben beginnt, da Atherome in den Arterien von jungen Erwachsenen, Kindern oder sogar Kleinkindern mit Unfalltod als Zufallsbefunde festgestellt wurden. Symptome treten jedoch erst zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt in Erscheinung, da die Folgen dieser Krankheit in Form von Lähmungen nicht auf der Sklerose selbst beruhen, sondern sekundär durch eine Abnahme der Gewebsdurchblutung zustande kommen.
