Abstract

The Swiss psychiatrist Gottlieb Burckhardt can be regarded as the father of psychosurgery. In 1891 he published in the Allgemeine Zeitschrift für Psychiatrie an essay entitled “Ueber Rindenexcisionen, als Beitrag zur operativen Therapie der Psychosen.” He believed that specific psychotic symptoms could be eliminated by removal of the appropriate cortical area. For example, auditory hallucinations might be pacified by a lesion of the auditory temporoparietal cortex. He carried out such operations on six schizophrenics, all of whom were reported to have somewhat improved. The author defended his daring handling by declaring that he had never had as his guiding principle “primum est non nocere” but “melium anceps remedium quam nullam.” His object was not to cure the patient but to change a dangerous personality into a harmless one. Burckhardt’s colleagues protested against his operations so much that he had to stop them, and his pioneer work was soon forgotten.
