Abstract

The rational use of drugs requires knowledge about their mode of action. Besides, such knowledge will often initiate research toward unraveling physiologic and pathogenetic mechanisms. When Kraepelin (1892) coined the term pharmacopsychology, he emphasized this aspect: “From the particular effect of an already well-known drug on a particular mental process, the possibility exists to better recognize the true nature of the latter.” It is interesting that Sigmund Freud (1914, 1930) has expressed similar lines of thought; in fact, he is not only the father of psychoanalysis but also one of the early prophets of modern psychopharmacology. However, it did not become possible to approach this problem in a fruitful manner until the 1950s, when the antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs were discovered. In addition, the discoveries that the clinical pictures of schizophrenia and depression can be faithfully mimicked by drugs also greatly helped to promote this research field.
