Abstract

During the last few years, interest in the study of blood pressure and hypertension in childhood has grown steadily. There are several reasons for this growth: (1) It has been recognized that in many cases, essential hypertension in adults originated in childhood or adolescence. (2) It is hoped that studies of hypertension at an early age will throw light on the pathophysiology of hypertension. (3) Early detection of hypertension seems important to prevent complications at a later stage. (4) Hypertension in the pediatric age group does not appear to be as rare as was formerly believed. In the meantime, it was realized that information on the prevalence of hypertension is scarce and that long-term follow-up studies of blood pressure are virtually lacking. Furthermore, the technique of blood pressure recording is far from standardized. Consequently, hardly two surveys have been done under identical conditions and therefore comparisons are difficult.
